NYC Supports Green Jobs

11/17/09

By Alanna Malone

As an expansion of PlaNYC, the sustainability plan of New York City, Mayor Bloomberg has announced a 30-point proposal to increase the region’s green economy. Programs will aid green businesses and provide training for 13,000 new jobs, doubling the workforce in the green sector over the next decade. Four areas of focus will foster this growth: green buildings, onsite renewable energy, carbon trading and finance, and greener neighborhoods.

With the recent initiatives, Robert C. Lieber, Deputy Mayor for Economic Development, claims New York City has “the most forward-thinking sustainability plan of any city in the nation.” Highlights include new research centers, solar-powered zones, urban wind projects, job-training programs, legislative reforms, youth education, and green incentives guides.

These ambitious ideas are all part of the comprehensive Five Borough Economic Opportunity Plan, a strategy to create jobs for New Yorkers, improve the city’s neighborhoods, and carve the path to economic recovery and growth.
